Our Street Lights and their Fixtures   Updated 9/5/23 Close

The Fixtures are no longer made...

That wouldn’t be a problem because the fixtures were very well made originally and can be repainted. But, the problem is the plastic hang-down dome that houses the bulb. These domes are not holding up and replacements can’t be readily bought.

Researching the options brought us to only one similar exterior fixtures that started at $250+ and was not made nearly as well as what we have. We found an interesting LED bulb that seems be a good resolution of the problem and doesn't need the plastic dome. The LED bulb is ±$10 at Home Depot and does a great job of lighting the area and looks good. We are currently testing one of these "Wide Surface" LEDs at the mailboxes to see how they hold up. They give the equivalent light of a 75w bulb as a 16w LED.

We have 7 used fixtures from along Winn-Dixie (see different article "The Winn-Dixie Area"). We have 3 new in boxes in our storage unit. None of these have the plastic drop domes.

A note about the fixtures: They were made of heavy cast aluminum in Italy. This is a quality of construction you won't find today. We feel it is well worth trying to save these fixtures by cleaning up and repainting, a minor expense for our homeowners.

We are now into two years of testing the LED bulbs with no visible downgrade.

Also, please don't forget you are required to maintain your street light, it is a covenant requirement. Without any other street lights throughout Sugarhill, your front yard light keeps the streets from becoming dark and dangerous.
